Becoming a Habitat for Humanity Homeowner

Habitat for Humanity Makes a Difference to Families

Habitat for Humanity is a homeownership program that empowers families, offering the opportunity to build a new life through the stability and security of owning a home.

Habitat Homes are Affordable

Habitat makes no profit from the sale of its homes and keeps building costs down by using volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials.  Mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity and used to build even more houses.

It's Not the Right Choice for Everyone

There are strict criteria for qualifying for a Habitat home, and the selection process takes several months. Credit checks, references and a review through the MA sex offender registry are required. Habitat for Humanity homes are not quick solutions to immediate housing needs.

Habitat for Humanity families are selected without regard to age, sex, sexual preference, marital status, disability, race, religion or national origin.

Applying to Habitat for Humanity

Candidates for a Habitat home must meet the following criteria:

1. You must currently live in substandard, overcrowded, inadequate, unsafe or inappropriate housing.

2. You must have steady income that  will enable you to make the monthly zero interest mortgage payments. You must show responsibility in paying your current and past bills and have a manageable level of debt.

3. You must be willing to partner with Habitat by investing "sweat equity" (200 hours for a one-adult household and 350 hours for a two-adult household) into your home.  That means physically helping to construct your home, the homes of other Habitat families and/or working in the HFHNCM ReStore or office.

4. You must be a U.S. citizen or documented permanent resident and live or work in one of the communities served by Habitat for Humanity NCM. Click here to see our service area map.

6. You must meet the Habitat for Humanaity Income Guidelines. To find out if you fit our income guidelines, click here.

The Application Process

Attend one of our public orientation meetings.  Applications will be made available to those interested at the end of the meeting.

Complete the application and gather all required documents.

Bring your completed application and documents to the scheduled "intake" session.  A Habitat volunteer will meet with you individually to go over your application and discuss whether you qualify for consideration as a Habitat homeowner.

Meet with Habitat representatives in your current home. They will verify the application information, understand your current housing situation, ask and answer questions and assess your willingness to partner with us.
