Building Homes, Building Hope,
Building Communities in North Central Massachusetts
Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts serves 25 communities as a non-profit, Christian ecumenical housing ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness right here, where we live. We've built 21 homes, and given 51 children, 28 adults and 2 grandmothers a safe, decent and stable place to live.
What happens when we build a Habitat for Humanity home? The lives of families in need are changed forever – the cycle of poverty is broken. Families experience the pride and responsibility of home ownership for the first time, and children thrive as they live in secure, well-built homes. Neighborhoods are revitalized and communities benefit from committed new homeowners and an improved tax base. Volunteers and donors experience a powerful lesson in faith, generosity, compassion and fellowship.
We are an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, and are responsible for our own local fundraising and local management. Visit us at the Massachusetts Innovation Center Campus, One Oak Hill Road, Fitchburg, MA 01420.
Haiti Recovery
The poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, long plagued by instability and disasters, has suffered another blow. A magnitude-7.0 earthquake, the worst to hit the Port-au-Prince area of Haiti in 200 years, struck Jan. 12, exacting a massive toll in lives and property damage.
Habitat for Humanity is in Haiti, as we have been for 26 years, to serve low-income families in need of shelter. Through the years, Habitat staff in Haiti have been building and repairing houses, providing housing microfinance, and offering training for construction trades. Now they need more support to take on the pressing tasks involved in cleaning up debris, acquiring and distributing construction materials and tools, and constructing transitional shelter that can help families achieve a stable home life.
Our assessment team is on the ground in Haiti, making plans for Habitat's contribution to the recovery. Our worldwide experience in post-disaster reconstruction, disaster mitigation and long-term development has shown us time and again that people are willing to open their hearts to families who are suffering and in desperate need of housing solutions. Many of have asked us about the need for volunteers. Volunteers are not being recruited or deployed at this time and will not be until the situation is more stable and Habitat can be certain its volunteers would be safe.
