Habitat for Humanity builds in Hudson

April 7, 2007 - Hudson, MA - Planning is well underway for an affordable Habitat for Humanity House in Hudson. The Local Partner Committee's next public meeting will be Tuesday, April 10th at 7:30 PM in Assembly Hall at the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson in Downtown Hudson on the corner of Main and Church Street.

If you are interested in learning about how the Hudson Habitat house will be planned, financed, and built, how a qualified modest income family will be selected as the home buyer, and about the family's "sweat equity" contribution, you are invited to watch a 20 minute slide show on the Habitat housing program and our North Central Mass. Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

At 8pm, Jen Burke, Hudson Town Planner will speak at this meeting regarding the Community Preservation Act that will be up for vote at the ballot this spring. If passed, this Act will provide funds to historical preservation, open space, recreation and community housing through an approved surcharge on real property and matching state funds. In addition to those interested in what this Act can do for a local Habitat for Humanity house, anyone who is interested in learning more about the vote is encouraged to attend this meeting.

The Committee will also review actions of the subcommittees on Site Selection, Construction Planning, Fund Raising, Publicity and Faith Partnership. If you have interest or experience in construction, PR, community outreach or fund raising, we can use your expertise and energies as a Hudson volunteer. For more information contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Emily Moyer, at 617-257-5951.

Donations to build a Habitat house in Hudson will be matched up to $8,500 by the Unitarian Church of Marlborough and Hudson. Please send your donation with "Hudson" written in the memo field of your check to Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts, One Oak Hill Road, Fitchburg, MA 01420. Or make a donation on the Chapter's website, www.ncmhabitat.org.

Acquiring a lot to build on is a critical need. If you have land in Hudson that you may be interested in donating, please contact Megan Foley, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts, at 978-348-2749 to learn of the tax benefits for a charitable donation.

Habitat for Humanity houses are planned and priced to be affordable to qualified modest-income families. Given high housing prices in Massachusetts, few standard houses in this area are affordable to modest-income families. The $110,000 to $120,000 no-interest mortgage for the first Hudson Habitat for Humanity house will be priced to help the qualified family progress from living in substandard conditions to being proud owners of a simple, decent Habitat home.

Participation in Habitat for Humanity planning and construction is a rewarding experience for the many volunteers. Plan on attending our April 10th meeting and help us expedite this worthwhile activity.
